What is CarFit?
Traditional driver safety programs improve adult driver safety by addressing cognitive abilities and skills. Drivers can also improve their safety by ensuring their cars are properly adjusted for them. A proper fit in one's car can greatly increase not only the driver's safety but also the safety of others.
CarFit is a FREE, interactive and educational program that teaches participants how to make their personal vehicle “fit” them to increase safety and mobility when they hit the road.
> Review 12 key areas of your fit to your car such as adequate space from the steering wheel, proper seat belt use, and properly adjusted head restraints.
> Learn how to use and adjust your safety devices.
> Each checkup takes about 20 minutes—this is not a driving test or mechanical inspection.
CarFit is an educational program that provides a quick, yet comprehensive review of how well you and your vehicle work together. The program, which was developed by AAA, AARP and the American Occupational Therapy Association, also provides information and materials on community-specific resources that could enhance your driving safety and increase mobility.
At this CarFit event, led by Professor John Wilcox at UNH, a team of trained OT students will work with each participant at a series of stations to evaluate different aspects of "fit". They will then identify vehicle adjustments and/or adaptive equipment that might enhance comfort and safety.
