VILLAGE MEMBER STORIES
Woody Sponaugle, Lee
How long have you lived on the Seacoast?
I moved to Rye in 1978 with my wife and daughters. Previously, I was a business owner, entrepreneur, turnaround manager, consultant and attorney. I operated businesses in the US, Asia, Eastern Europe, and the Middle East. The industries included medical devices, defense manufacturing, commercial real estate, building supplies and electrical equipment
We are excited about the recent launch of the Seacoast Dementia Hub; what is your connection to the Hub?
I am one of the founders of the Seacoast Dementia Hub. I had been a full time unpaid caregiver from 2010-2023 for my wife who had Alzheimer’s. During this time, I started and facilitated a support group for men who were also in the caregiver role. In 2013, I spoke at the NH Alzheimer's Care to Care Conference and have appeared in a variety of panels, videos and TV productions. I have also testified before the NH Legislature for caregiver assistance programs.
For the past several years, along with four other prominent individuals, we developed a project called the Seacoast Dementia Hub, which has just launched with the support of the River Woods Group.
Because of a relentless illness, I haven’t been able to take part in many Seacoast Village activities. This will change as my health improves. A bright spot has been my volunteer drivers. Each appointment has turned into an opportunity to meet wonderful people, who bring laughter, warmth, and a comfortable excitement for life. This kindness has lifted my spirits and reminded me of the strength of community.
Why did you join the Village and how does it fit into your long term plan?
As a widower living alone, I have enjoyed the company of the Village’s men’s group and other events and services. This has made it easier to live out my remaining years at home.
