VILLAGE MEMBER STORIES

Bonnie Keast, Exeter

What brought you to the Seacoast?

After living in busy and thriving northern California for more than 45 years, I found myself yearning for a place with fewer people and cars, closer access to tree-filled natural spaces, and four seasons. I had lived my teen years in Massachusetts and graduated from University of Maine before traveling west. In 2015, I realized it was time to return to New England. New Hampshire fit the bill of what I was looking for and after renting several furnished spaces, I settled into Exeter Mill as my “age in place” home.

What was your professional experience and what have you spent your time doing since retiring?

I believe that the spirit should never grow old. When I ended my professional career in education, I studied personal coaching and earned certifications as a somatic and an ontological coach. Much of what I learned during those years distilled into my book, Cultivating the Garden Within. Later, my writing partner and I wrote a book entitled Beyond Salt and Pepper: Forty Fabulous Flavor Enhancers, which highlighted her gourmet cooking expertise and my love of researching tidbits of information.

Currently I’m enjoying exploring New Hampshire and writing a monthly newsletter (New Hampshire Notes) about my discoveries. Walks along the beach, zoom attendance of various events, yoga sessions at the Mill, and trips in the United States and Europe create a nice balance of learning and activity.

How does the Village fit into your long-term plans?

I believe that our generations are forging new ways of growing older. Most people in previous generations seemed to disappear after their 60’s. Many of us now are able to remain vital and engaged into our 80’s and 90’s. Participating in the Village makes complete sense to me. I value belonging to an organization that honors both independence and connection, offers a variety of activities and opportunities for service, and provides needed resources. Currently I’m drawn to the monthly walks and information meetings on zoom. I also know that the Village offers a wonderful web of connections with people and experiences that I can continue to enjoy as I age.
