Join the North Cluster for Dean Plager's presentation about retracing the voyage of Lief Ericson, a true-life adventure on a Viking Ship! In 1997, Dean Plager was a crew member on a replica of a Viking ship which sailed from Lief Erickson’s father’s farm in Greenland to L’anse aux Meadows, Newfoundland, the only confirmed Viking settlement in North America, today a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Through video and slides, Dean will share his experiences traversing the open ocean in a Viking vessel typical of those circa 1000 AD.
About the Speaker
Seacoast Village member Dean Plager, a life-long sailor, visited the Viking ship the Saga Siglar in Boston in 1984 and dreamed of sailing on such a boat. In February of 1997, he saw a news story of the construction in Maine of a similar vessel. Two weeks before leaving for Greenland, a member of the crew dropped out and Dean took his place and the adventure began.
