VILLAGE MEMBER STORIES
Jane Kavanaugh, Rye
How long lived in the Seacoast area?
I am a NH native – and have lived in various NH seacoast communities my whole life. I have lived in Rye for 8 years. My son lives in Hampton and my daughter lives in Kittery. I am very fortunate. I have one grandchild who usually helps me with all my computer problems.
What did you do prior to retirement?
I received a B.A. in Early Childhood and taught primary grades for a number of years. Then I took some time to raise my family, then to take care of my elderly parents, and help my aunts and uncles. I thought I was old at 43 and went back to get my master’s in counseling. So, in the last third of my career, I worked as a school guidance counselor. A friend advised me that I should not just retire. She asked me if I had considered being a life coach. I began training to be certified as a life coach. I can do this from the comfort of my own living room. I focus primarily on women who are in transition or approaching a transition in their lives. I also started a card making business on the side. I love taking pictures and I sell them at Kittery Art Association and the Tea Space in Ogunquit. I feel like I have a life of retirement.
How do you view retirement?
I am most grateful. I made it through challenging years. Now it has allowed me the time and energy to do other things. I am very involved with Voices from the Heart (for 22 years) and South Church. I love to travel. Right now, Ireland is on my bucket list. I am an Irish citizen, and I love the people. I am called to go back! I want this to be perfect. I love life, love people, and love living!
What aspects of being a Village member do you find most helpful or enjoyable?
I view the benefits of being a member as two-fold: The selfish part of me realizes that I am getting older. Being part of a network is important. On the giving end, I am not shy. I am interested in doing anything that involves outreach. I just need to know the scope of the volunteer opportunities as a member. I know a lot of people and love making connections. I love making whatever is needed to happen for someone.
If you were to encourage a friend to become a Village member, what would you tell them?
I know a lot of people my age. Many of them have financial wherewithal to go to a place like Riverwoods. That is not true for a lot of us. People need to know that there are other options.
